What Does It Do?
İSTAÇ Co., Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality
Environmental Protection and Waste Materials
Valuation Industry and Trade Co., is one of
the Economic Enterprises of Istanbul Metropolitan
Municipality.
As the name denotes, İSTAÇ Co. within the
scope of Solid Waste Project of Istanbul Metropolitan
Municipality, provides services for transportation
of solid wastes, production of compost fertilizer,
recycling of wastes, disposal of them via
regulated storing, electric energy generation
from landfills, transportation of medical
waste and their disposal via incineration.
Our vision
Our vision is an expression
that we have devoted ourselves to what we
intend to accomplish. This expression includes
our principle of continuously contributing
the improvement of environment quality for
leaving a more livable world to next generations,
and our target of taking the advantageous
of the opportunity of national and international
cooperation in waste management to become
an institution directing the sector in a leader
position, with the aim of realizing the said
principle.

quality standards, we have taken it as our

efforts with our innovative applications,
technical information accumulation, experience,
our utilization of adequate technology, our
institutionalized and efficient organizational

Sanitary Landfills
Vegetal soil of the fields that are determined
at remote sites from residential areas and rural
development regions is cleaned and underground
draining is provided.
Relevant measures are taken to avoid penetration
of environmental waters, and the natural ground
is compressed after being brought to suitable
slope.
Following this process, two layers of clay are
laid down each with a thickness of 30 cm and
two levels of clay is spread and compressed.
After high-density folio (geo-membrane) is coated
on this ground formed with a thickness of 2
mm, the geo-textile protective layer is laid
on it.

Medical Waste
Unless the medical wastes are separately collected
and removed, it will be hard to avoid the risk
of infection of people by many dangerous diseases
such as Hepatitis, and it will be inevitable
that plenty of Health, Environmental and Financial
problems will arise. Works on medical wastes
are those contributing to the formation of a
Clean City – Healthy Society.

 Debris
and excavation rubbles poured to the environment
in an uncontrolled manner have lead to noise
and environmental pollution, in addition to
the threat posed by them on the lives of human
beings and living things, the structure of soil
has started to change, where road borders become
little lakes during rainy days, streets become
full of mud, more and more water is being used
for general cleaning which leads to accumulation
of more waste water, mud streaming into the
sewage system from street and road borders create
accumulations and congestion, all of which lead
to the increase in cleaning expenses and disruption
of services to be provided on this area.

Electric Generation
From Garbage Gas
Gases created in the landfill in this system
are collected with active collection system,
sent to gas motor and incarnated there, thus
electric and heat energy is generated.
The greenhouse effect, which means the effect
of heating the atmosphere, created by the garbage
gases formed released from the landfills to
the atmosphere, is 20 folds of that created
by carbon dioxide. Thus, by means of this system,
gases created out of control are eliminated
without creating any harm on the environment,
and the risk of explosion is decreased.

Cleaning of Main Arteries
 As
the Work Unit for Cleaning of Main Arteries
affiliated to İSTAÇ CO. Enterprises Directorate,
we clean by sweeping an approximate area of
3.300.000 m2 on 790 arteries.
The work we do bears an importance for the cleaning
of Istanbul, the greatest city of Turkey with
its historical and tourism significance, and
it is of a character that this work may increase
of decrease the reputation of Istanbul Metropolitan
Municipality because of its visibility by the
public.
